I have spent a few hours the last week using different free photo
managers to organize my pictures. I have tested with roughly 10 000
pictures in 150 albums (folders)
and then Picasa 3.6 on both Mac and Windows. Face recognition is a very nice feature. It works fine in all the
tested programs. But the after using all three programs I have to say
that Picasa is the best in terms of identifying faces correctly. All
programs offers suggestions once they have learnt to recognize a face.
They all do a decent job but with my images Picasa did much better
when suggesting faces than the other programs. The process takes quite some time initially in all programs. All
images have to be analyzed, faces identified and then similar faces
needs to be grouped together. Once that is done the computer can start
to suggest faces for a person. As a user I can then help the system by
confirming or rejecting suggestions. The more suggestions the software
gets, the better it will identify pictures with the same person in
them. So after my unscientific test I will focus on using Picasa. It gets
the job done better than Windows Photo Gallery or iPhoto. /Joakim
